The Blue Beetle Movie Isn’t Set in El Paso & Many Are Disappointed
Boo! We want our superhero back!
For those who haven't heard, the trailer for DC Comics' Blue Beetle just dropped and it looks pretty badass.
Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, you may recognize him from Netflix's Cobra Kai. The cast also includes George Lopez as Uncle Rudy, Adriana Barraza and Harvey Guillen.
Our resident comic book lover, Nico, wrote an entire article detailing the history of Blue Beetle and his origin in El Paso!
That's right, in the comics, Jaime Reyes lives in El Paso. But the movie will make you believe otherwise, because, as you saw above, the movie isn't set in El Paso, it's set in... Palmera City? WTF!
That's right, Blue Beetle will not be walking and saving the streets of El Paso, instead he'll be in Palmera City- which looks like the complete opposite of El Paso; there's a beach for crying out loud!
According to Comicbook.com, here is what director Angel Manuel Soto had to say about switching the locations:
"Superman has Metropolis, Central City for the Flash, Gotham. Why doesn't he have his own city? He's f*cking dope. And that doesn't mean that El Paso is not dope. El Paso is awesome, and El Paso is very much present in the life of the family. But in service of positioning Blue Beetle as a potential leader in the DCU, Palmera City came to life, and thanks to Palmera City as well and the bigger world-building around it is what got us the theatrical."
Suffice it to say, many El Pasoans were disappointed with the change in locations.
I am disappointed in the location change as well, but I'll probably still go see it. Blue Beetle hits theaters on August 18.
