Daylight Savings Time Is A Great Time To Update Pet Microchips
Now that daylight savings time is in full effect, it's the perfect time to update your pet's microchip information.
Daylight savings time reminds us to not only spring forward but also serves as a yearly reminder to change the batteries on smoke alarms, and for pet owners, the perfect time to update the contact information on their pet's microchips.
According to El Paso Animal Services, nearly 3,000 lost pets have entered the Animal Services Center this year alone.
Unfortunately, many of the lost pets were either not microchipped or had incorrect contact information, preventing the pet from reconnecting with its owner.
Information On Updating Pet Microchips
- First, you will need your pet's microchip number, but if you don't know where it is, you can take your pet to the veterinarian or any El Paso Fire Department station to get scanned.
- Next, look up your pet's microchip manufacturer by visiting petmicrochiplookup.org and entering the chip number in the search box. The result will tell you which company manufactured the chip and where you can register it or update the contact information.
- You can also add your pet's microchip information to the foundanimals.org database for free for an extra layer of protection.
If your pet does not have a microchip, your veterinarian can implant one on request. Microchips usually cost about $25 at most veterinary clinics.
During the rest of March Animal Services' Resource Rover program will also host free microchip clinics throughout the city. El Pasoans can take advantage of the following upcoming free microchip clinics:
