Craziest Weather Games the Dallas Cowboys Have Ever Played
The Dallas Cowboys have played some crazy games, whether it's at home in Texas or on the road. The Cowboys are also no stranger to playing some crazy weather games neither. In fact they've played 3 of them in the past.
The 1967 NFL Championship Game, aka the Ice Bowl
There's a reason why the 1967 match up between the Cowboys & the Green Bay Packers was called "The Ice Bowl". Lambeau Field reached a "cool" -13 degrees Fahrenheit! Oh sorry did I said "cool"? I meant FREEZING. It didn't help that there was also a wind chill of 36 degrees below 0...
Despite the fact that several players got frostbite & even one fan in the stands died of exposure to the cold, the game is regarded as one of the greatest NFL games in history. The Packers would beat the Cowboys at home, 21-17.
The 1993 Sleet Bowl
The Cowboys would experience one of the craziest weather games at home on Thanksgiving, November 25, 1993. That afternoon a crazy mix of rain & snow would hit Dallas-Fort Worth and would greatly affect the Cowboys-Dolphins game at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.
This game would be officially nicknamed, The Sleet Bowl, although Cowboys fans have another name for this game...the Leon Lett Game.
Yes Cowboys fans know this one really well; because of Leon Lett's mistake, the Dolphins would be able to recover the ball & kick a game winning field goal & win the game 16-14. Don't worry Leon Lett fans; he would redeem himself by helping the Cowboys win 3 times in his career (even if this was the one play he seems to be known for...).
This wouldn't be the last time Texas Stadium would see an intense game thanks to the weather. That would happen 7 years later.
The 2000 Pickle Juice Game
On September 3, 2000, the Dallas Cowboys would face off against their rivals the Philadelphia Eagles at Texas Stadium in the season opening game for the 2000-2001 season. This game would be regarded as one of the hottest NFL games in history; it was 109 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff and the inside of the stadium reached 130 degrees.
While many of the Cowboys players would suffer from the heat, the Eagles... well they were fine. In fact they would play all the way to a 41-14 victory. The secret? Pickle juice...
Andy Reid, who was the coach for the Eagles at the time, made his players drink pickle juice before the game to help prevent his players from cramping due to the intense heat. Tyreek Hill has also drank pickle juice before when he was with the Chiefs in 2021; maybe that's Andy Reid's secret for his players...
We will certainly see some intense weather games in the future; how many will affect the Cowboys at home or the road? Well...we can only watch and find out...
