There’s A Unique Underground High School In This Small Texas Town

Aspermont High School, in Stonewall County, was built back in 1966 as a bomb shelter for the community during the Cold War era. The high school doesn't have any windows in the classrooms and is built almost entirely underground. There are currently 68 students enrolled in the school, some of which are now headed to upcoming state-wide competitions for athletics and academics.

It's arguably one of the most unique school structures in Texas. Since its construction, it has provided a safe place for residents that don't have a cellar of their own during tornado season. Family pets and even goats have been welcomed into this small Texas school during bad weather.

Students affectionately dubbed it "The Cave" and I was told that although it can be a bit cold in there, it's also very nice to walk into on an exceptionally hot Texas day. What do you think? Have you ever seen an underground school like this one? When I lived up in northern Minnesota, it wasn't uncommon for universities to have underground tunnels for students to use during really cold weather, but this is the first school I've ever seen that was initially built as a bunker. Pretty cool stuff, huh?
