The religious holiday of Ash Wednesday is near- marking the beginning of lent season. This year, Ash Wednesday lands on February 17th. For many, after receiving their ashes, they like to partake in a feast. Food, of course, is very important to religious holidays.

Lent food season is a big deal in El Paso, restaurants are known to have great specials during lent season filled with some regional favorites like lentils and capirotada. Now, you can add another great El Paso restaurant to the list of places to get some great lent food, Café Mayapan.

Café Mayapan, located at 2000 Texas Ave., will be reopening their doors starting on Ash Wednesday, February 17th! According to their announcement on Facebook, you can actually begin to order now and pay online through their website- mujerobrera.org/cafemayapan. Services will be for pick-up only. Café Mayapan will be offering their traditional lent menu on Ash Wednesday and every Friday.

Since opening in 2001, Café Mayapan, which is run by La Mujer Obrera, an organization dedicated to helping marginalized women, has been known for more than it’s traditional take on authentic Mexican food; it also provides a community for celebrating Mexican heritage and supporting economic development for working class women. I'm sure many people will be happy to see the restaurant reopen.
