After more than four decades, Iron Skillet, the favored truck stop for long-haul truckers, travelers, and El Pasoans alike, is closing its doors, giving way for Black Bear Diner to move in.

Black Bear Diner first originated in 1995 in Mount Shasta, California, offering some of the most delicious "old-fashioned" comfort food around today; the unique diner has over 140 locations spanning fourteen states, including Texas, and soon opening a new location in the Sun City.

So, what makes this restaurant chain unique, and why will El Pasoans love or hate the new eatery? Let me break it down.

While living in Portland for a few years, I loved eating at Black Bear Diner, and just recently, while on vacation visiting family, we had to hit up the diner once again, so I'm fresh off that Bear high and just had to share.

For anyone who has never experienced Black Bear Diner, these are the three things you need to know before it opens in El Paso.

The Food 

Let's jump in because the home-style food at Black Bear Diner is not only hearty but varied. The (old-timey newspaper) menu is vast, offering traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites.

Fan favorite breakfast options include their famous Sweet Cream Pancakes or Waffles, Biscuits and Gravy, and the BIGFOOT Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs. While breakfast is available all day, patrons can also choose from burgers, salads, sandwiches, meatloaf, fried chicken, pot roast, steaks, and fish.

Yes, the menu is extensive and phenomenally delicious. Still, it's also a big no-no for those on a dietary restriction which should also stay away from Black Bear Diner's mouthwatering mini personal pies, especially their Lava Cake.

The Atmosphere

Walking into a Black Bear Diner is like a cozy cabin where comfortable booths make it easy to lose track of time. The lighting is dim, and bears are everywhere, and I mean everywhere;  a reminder that Black Bear Diner is all about Bears.

From the moment you roll up, you'll notice chainsaw-carved Bear(s) - the bears differ per location. You can also spot them around the restaurant indoors, including on the ketchup and hot sauce bottles (they make their own) and just about every nook and cranny - those Bears are everywhere.

The Merchandise

Okay, so you might be visiting for the great food but let me tell you, you'll need to be strong, especially if you have kids, because once you see the merch – it's all over.

Patrons will find everything from pajamas, shirts, purses, magnets, books, aprons, mugs, stuffed animal bears, and so much more, including those super comfy and adorable Black Bear Paw slippers.

It's all so tempting, so parents, be prepared to avert your children's eyes while ushering them quickly out the door; otherwise, expect to drop a good bill on souvenirs.

So while the food, atmosphere, and merchandise might make you love or hate Black Bear Diner, we won't have to wait too long before it opens because we can expect the hotspot to open its doors in El Paso by the end of the year into the new year.
