Darren Aronofsky, the director of redemption-themed, Oscar-nominated films such as ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan,’ got behind the camera to shoot the video for the Lou Reed and Metallica single ‘The View.’ While the Loutallica collaboration, which yielded the ‘Lulu’ album, has been the subject of much criticism and even lower sales, Aronofsky breathed new artistic life into the project with this visually arresting black and white video. One might call the video “eye magnetic,” to borrow and change a phrase from the ‘Tallica lexicon.

The clip is a black and white marvel consisting mostly of performance footage, where Aronofsky skillfully captures the fast playing and sonic discord through distorted images, a grainy pallor and jagged camera angles. He zeroes in on Lou Reed’s time-worn face, James Hetfield’s snarl and more.

Aronofsky was beyond stoked to lens the clip, saying “The first time I heard ‘The View’ I was stunned. I had never heard anything like it. Half was all Lou. The other half all Metallica. It was a marriage that on the surface made no sense, but the fusion changed the way I thought about both artists and morphed into something completely fresh and new. I couldn’t stop listening to it. Lou’s crushing lyrics, and the band’s incredible licks. It’s so original and that’s why I wanted to work on it.’ Many of Metallica’s fans felt the same way as Aronofsky — as in they were stunned when they heard the song, since the jarring music was so off the beaten path for ‘Tallica.

Ulrich also commented on working with a cinematic auteur like Aronofsky, who is known for stunning visuals, hefty plots and likeable but flawed characters in his films. The drummer said, “To have a song like ‘The View’ visualized through the eyes and magic touch of Darren Aronofsky is beyond my wildest dream. The marriage between images, music and words in this video is indescribably thrilling and I am so next level psyched to be involved in a project that brings together the creative minds of Darren Aronofsky, Lou Reed and The Tallica.”

The video ends with Reed calling for an encore. Perhaps there will be another Aronofsky-directed vid?
