School District May Hire Project Manager For New Construction

The school board for the Ysleta Independent School District is considering plans to hire a project manager.  If voters approve a 451-million-dollar bond issued next month, Superintendent Xavier De La Torre says the project manager will be responsible for overseeing construction projects at several schools around the district.  To pay off the bond debt, the school district is asking voters to raise property taxes by 14-cents for every 100-dollars of valuation, or about 140-dollars a year for a 100-thousand-dollar home.

Lawmakers Vote To Repeal In-State Tuition For Undocumented Immigrants

A bill that would repeal in-state tuition for some undocumented immigrants has won preliminary approval at the State Capitol.  Senate bill 1819 has been forwarded to the House Veterans Affairs committee following a party-line vote with Republicans supporting the measure and Democrats opposed.  In-state tuition is typically about 11-thousand-dollars lower than out-of-state tuition in Texas.

Border Patrol Busts Drug Smuggling Woman

An 18-year-old woman is under arrest after allegedly trying to smuggle more than ten pounds of crystal meth across the border.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents say the drugs have an estimated street value of more than 330-thousand-dollars.  Border patrol spokeswoman Beverly Good says a drug-sniffing drug was called in to make the drug bust.  The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Christina Avalos of Chihuahua, Mexico.

Boy Falls From Moving Truck

An eight-year-old boy is on life support after falling from the back of a moving truck in Tornillo last night.  The boy, whose name has not been released, has been rushed to El Paso Children's Hospital with serious head injuries.  Police say the boy's mother, who was driving the truck, has been arrested on charges of child endangerment.

Police Are Getting Body Cameras In Las Cruces

All police officers in Las Cruces, New Mexico will soon be equipped with body cameras.  Deputy Police Chief Justin Dunivan says each new camera will cost about 600-dollars, but city officials say the cameras should actually save money in the long run.  Officials say that's because the cameras will help resolve complaints against police more quickly, and may actually cut down on the number of complaints.
