California is in a severe drought and only has about a year's worth of stored water left. They're out of water and people are freaking out.

Rationing seems inevitable. The state has begun building a billion dollar desalination plant and now they're looking at cleaning and drinking waste water.  Yep, they may start drinking urine. Not quite to the extreme that Bear Grylls does, but it could happen. Not a big deal according to some folks;

Because recycled water that ends up in drinking water undergoes extensive and thorough purification. In addition, it is usually added to groundwater or surface water for further cleansing before being sent to a drinking water supply where it is again treated. In fact, it has been shown to have fewer contaminants than existing treated water supplies.

The same article says that all water goes through various stages in the wild, with all kinds of stuff happening in it, so we're basically already drinking urine.  It just sounds bad when you say it out loud, I guess.
