El Paso Children's Hospital Seeks Bankruptcy Protection

Officials with the El Paso Children's Hospital say they hope to keep the hospital going, in spite of a federal bankruptcy filing.  Yesterday the hospital filed for Chapter 11 protection, which would allow it to restructure its debts.  Children's CEO Mark Herbers had been trying to negotiate a settlement with the University Medical Center but those talks failed earlier this week.  Herbers promises that the filing won't affect patient care.

Senate Committee To Vote On Border Bill

A state Senate committee could vote as soon as today on a bill that's designed to improve border security.  Among other things, the measure would boost the number of law enforcement officers stationed along the border.  It's similar to a House border bill, meaning lawmakers may be close to agreeing on a compromise.

State Senate To Debate Abortions For Minors

The full state Senate will debate a bill that would make it more difficult for underage girls to get abortions without their parents' approval.  A Senate committee yesterday recommended passage of the measure, which has already cleared the House.  Among other things, the bill raises the burden of proof needed for a minor to claim that asking for parental permission would put her at risk for abuse.

Hillary Clinton Plans Texas Fundraising Trip

Her campaign says Hillary Clinton is coming to Texas next month.  There's no word yet on which cities the Democratic presidential hopeful will visit during the trip, which is expected to consist of small fundraising appearances.  She'll be here June 3rd and 4th.  Coincidentally, June 4th is also the date Republican Rick Perry will be in Dallas, to announce his presidential intentions.

2 LCPD Officers Fired

Two Las Cruces police officers are out of a job, fired for violating departmental policies.  Former officers Richard Garcia and Danny Salcido were caught on video, slamming a handcuffed inmate into a wall.  That inmate is now suing the city.
