Haunted houses are fun, but eventually someone jumping out from behind a wall with a chainsaw stops being scary when you know they're getting paid to do it.

Walking through an old Texas hospital in the dark where thousands of people are believed to have died?

Yeah, that's a little different.

Spooky season is getting underway, and Texans looking for something a little more intense than the typical haunted house can actually take a ghost tour inside Yorktown Memorial Hospital.

And no, there aren't actors hiding around corners waiting to scare you, the hospital has enough creepy stories of its own!

The Haunted History of Yorktown Memorial Hospital

Yorktown Memorial Hospital opened in 1951 and was originally operated by the Felician Sisters of the Roman Catholic Church.

The hospital eventually closed in 1986. The building was later used as a drug rehabilitation center before closing for good in 1992. According to Yorktown Memorial Hospital's current owners, more than 2,000 people are believed to have died at the property over the years.

That history has helped the abandoned hospital develop quite the paranormal reputation.

Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported hearing unexplained voices and footsteps, seeing shadow figures and even encountering glowing red eyes.

You know, all the things you definitely want to hear about a building you're preparing to enter after dark.

Yorktown Memorial Hospital Offers Ghost Tours in Texas

Today, the property is owned by Curious Twins Tours & Events, which offers several ways to explore the hospital.

There are daytime tours for those of us who would prefer to have the Texas sun available as backup.

For the braver crowd, there are evening ghost tours and paranormal investigations.

And then there's the option I personally would have to think VERY carefully about: private overnight paranormal investigations.

Those can keep you inside Yorktown Memorial Hospital from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m.

Oh, and there's no electricity or plumbing inside the hospital. Suddenly, the daytime tour sounds lovely.

A Texas Ghost Tour Made for Spooky Season

Part of what makes Yorktown Memorial Hospital interesting is that this isn't your typical Halloween haunted house.

The owners say there are no jump scares, costumed characters or made-up ghost stories. Instead, the tours focus on the building's documented history, folklore and paranormal experiences people have reported over the years.

The hospital's creepy reputation has even landed it on paranormal television shows including Ghost Adventures and Destination Fear.

With Halloween getting closer, this could be one of the more unusual ways to celebrate spooky season in Texas.

Would I tour Yorktown Memorial Hospital? During the day? Absolutely.

After dark? Maybe. Spend the entire night inside?

I'll meet you at a restaurant in the morning and you can tell me all about it!
