Wednesday Winds Wreaking Havoc Around El Paso – To Top 65 MPH

Welcome to a windy Wednesday in El Paso, where winds are whipping something fierce and are expected to gust up to 65 mph.

Today's winds are wreaking havoc across the region from Ruidoso to Las Cruces and the borderland.

As of mid-afternoon, El Paso Electric has reported at least 23 downed power poles, and over 1000 customers have been affected by power outages in the Clint and Socorro areas. Crews are actively generating power first and then replacing the downed poles.

In Las Cruces, the high winds have also caused problems as residents are also dealing with power outages in the region.

The winds have also prompted the Environmental Services Department to close the Greater El Paso Landfill and its five Citizen Collection Stations early today due to the low visibility and high winds.

The landfill and the five Citizen Collection Stations, or drop-off sites have closed for the day and, weather permitting will resume regular operating hours tomorrow.

According, to the National Weather Service, 30 to 40 mph southwest winds are blowing and gusting up to 65 mph affecting Far West Texas and the El Paso Metro, from Hudspeth, Otero, and Doña Ana counties. Drivers should take caution, mainly due to low visibility and blowing debris, and make sure you hold on to those door handles as well.

Homeowners should also take care to secure down any patio furniture, trampolines, and trash and recycling bins, which can tip over and blow onto streets or sidewalks, contributing to windblown trash and creating obstructions for pedestrians and motorists.
