The Academy Awards will be held on April 25th. Partially because of the pandemic, most of us haven’t seen many, possibly ANY, of the nominated films. I’ve seen “The Trial of the Chicago Seven” and about one third of “Nomadland” so far and THAT’S IT!

I’m going to do a rundown of the top Oscar nominated films AND, where applicable, what theaters that are showing them in El Paso.

1.) NOMADLAND

This movie makes the cut because it’s nominated in multiple categories AND it’s actually showing in El Paso theaters. Chloe Zhao’s poignant portrait of travelling across America got 6 Oscar noms including Best Picture, Best Director and a Best Actress nod to Francis McDormand. And, yes, it IS showing currently in theaters here. You can catch it at Cinemark West on Remcon, Cinemark 20 at the Las Palmas Marketplace and the Cinemark on far east Montana.

Of course, you can also stream it on Hulu.

2.) Minari

This is the one that got Glenn from “The Walking Dead” a Best Actor nomination! Also, it’s up for Best Picture, Director, Original Score and Original Screenplay. Did I mention the actor who played Glenn is in it?!?

Minari is currently running at TWO El Paso theatres. It’s at Cinemark at Las Palmas and at Bassett Place Mall. You can also rent it via YouTube, Amazon and Google Play.

3.) Mank

David Fincher is one of my favorite directors and this film leads the 2021 field with TEN nominations. Fincher is up for Best Director, Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried are both nominated in acting categories and it’s one of the Best Film nominees. Plus, six OTHER categories.

“Mank”, a biopic about “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, debuted on Netflix where it can still be found. Also, it’s showing at Cinemark West in El Paso but, as far as I can tell, it’s only showing once: Tuesday March 23rd at 4:15 pm.

4.) The Father

This film deals with a parent struggling with dementia. Anthony Hopkins is up for Best Actor and Olivia Coleman is nominated for acting as well. Also, Best Picture, adapted screenplay, Production Design and Editing.

“The Father” IS showing at Bassett Place Mall but the showings are sporadic. It’s definitely showing at least once on Wednesday and Thursday at the Bassett Cinema.

NOTE: This is one of the very few movies that ISN’T available on any streaming platform. If you want to see it before April 25th you’ll need to catch it in a theatre OR it will be available for purchase starting on March 26th.

5.) Sound of Metal

I’m including this one because it’s nominated in multiple categories (Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actor and several others). Also, it’s about a drummer in a heavy metal band that is losing his hearing, so I think that’s of interest to you rock fans.

“Sound of Metal” is streaming on Amazon. If you want to see it on the big screen, it opens this Friday at the AMC 16 in Northeast El Paso.

There are a slew of other great films that are nominated. For a full list, click on this link!
