Coming off the success of last month’s 'Low & Slow' lowrider exhibit, the El Paso Museum of History opens its newest exhibition, Lucha Libre: Stories from the Ring.

Lucha Libre has an immense following, both in Mexico and other countries, and is the most popular sport after soccer across the border, thus becoming an integral part of pop culture.

Lucha Libre's history dates back as far as a century; however, it wasn’t until the 80s, during its Golden Age in Juárez, that Lucha Libre became a cultural symbolism and continues to ripple into today’s modern age and pop culture.

The Lucha Libre theme has also proven a big hit for the film industry with movies like Nacho Libre. The 2006 film is loosely based on the story of a real-life Mexican Catholic priest who had a side gig as a masked luchador in order to support the orphanage he directed.

Most recently, Amazon Films announced that they were filming Cassandro, based on the true story of Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rises to international stardom after he creates the character Cassandro El Exotic.

With so much history of the sport between the borderland, El Pasoans are invited to check out the new exhibit Lucha Libre: Stories from the Ring, El Paso edition, which will showcase stories, sponsors, and memorabilia all related to the history of Lucha Libre, its connections to the border region, and the stories that have come from the sport.

This week during the Last Thursdays art crawl, the El Paso Museum of History will debut the new exhibit opening at 6 p.m. in downtown El Paso.

The opening event will feature luchadores from EP Heroes Lucha Libre, a live DJ set with Rodriga Rockmore, and refreshments.

The El Paso Museum of History invites the El Paso community to this free, family-friendly event to explore the exhibit, which will be on display through March of 2022.
