He's hoping he can get 100 birthday cards for his special day and his assisted living home is trying to help him make his wish come true. South lives at the Brookdale Senior Living Center in Watauga, Texas near Fort Worth. They posted a photo on Facebook of James South holding a sign that said:
"Hello! My name is James South and I am a proud World War II Veteran! I will be turning 100 on October 7th, 2019 and I would like to receive 100 birthday cards."
South joined the Army in 1940 and was deployed to Normandy seven days after D-Day, according to CNN. He and his wife Sophie were married for 55 years until she passed away in 2001. The couple had one child, a son Jim South. Their son said he has a three-day celebration planned for his dad's big birthday.
