It's never fun being scammed in Texas or anywhere in the world. With practically everything being available on your smartphones, it's so much easier for people to trick people and pretend to be someone they're not. That's what happened here in El Paso, Texas, where one person thought their phone company was calling them.

If your "phone company" is calling you in, it might be a scam.

An unnamed man was getting a call from their phone company, in this case it was Verizon but it was Verizon Support. On Friday, August 23rd, an agent who worked for "Verizon" claimed there were some unauthorized charges on their account and would remove them & put them on a new account. However...there would be a fee for the service...

Sadly this person fell victim and paid $150 to "Verizon Support" through Cash App. After not getting that promised call back, the person rang Verizon directly and explained what happened. They said "yeah that wasn't us... we would NEVER call our customers directly". This prompted the person to get in touch with the El Paso Police Department & Cash App directly. There are now pending cases regarding this incident; you can read the whole FTC report below.

However there IS some good news to the story; on Sunday, Cash App was able to reimburse the $150 that was taken out of this person's account.

This person got lucky, but not everyone will be lucky to get their money back. The bottom line is: if you are getting a call from a number that says they're your phone company, there's a VERY good chance it's not them. More than likely, it's someone trying to get your money, and possibly your identity too.

If that DOES happen, get in touch with your phone company and tell them everything that happened.

Sadly people aren't just pretending to be your phone company to scam you, they can also pretend to be your bank and it nearly happened here in El Paso. You can read that story here.
