Almost 22 years to the date, one Texas man will be executed for the murder of a 5-year-old El Paso girl.

It was a crime that shook the entire borderland including me. I think every El Pasoan remembers where they were when they heard the news that 5-year-old Alexandra Flores was kidnapped from an eastside Walmart on November 18, 2001.

Alexandra's body was found the following morning, almost 20 miles away from the abduction site- she was found naked and slightly burnt. A palm print found on a bag lead investigators to David Renteria- who would eventually be convicted of capital murder in 2003.

Now, Renteria is set to be executed by lethal injection on November 16 at 5 PM Mountain Time. That's two days before the 22nd anniversary of Alexandra's kidnapping. Our news partner, KVIA and Stephanie Valle have a great episode of this crime in the "Borderland Crimes" podcast- which you can listen to here.

The grisly murder rattled everyone- it was unbelievable that something like this could happen here, in El Paso. And for two decades, one family had to continue life without their little girl getting justice.

Many in El Paso feel like this is justice being served. One El Pasoan commented:

Finally bring some justice to the family!

Another noted how long this process took:

Long over due. There's a special place waiting for him. These last 20 years should have been hers to enjoy.
I'll always remember your name Alejandra Flores.

Several news outlets report that Renteria's attorney's filed appeals, and they even filed one the day before the execution.

Hopefully this will be the end of a terrible saga in the borderland.
