Police Investigate Suspicious Death
No arrests have been made, but police are investigating a suspicious death in East El Paso. Police say the victim is a woman whose body has been found by family members in a house on the 11500 block of Jerry Lewis Way. The victim's name has not been released, nor has any other information about her death.
Senate Bill Worries Officials At El Paso Animal Shelter
Officials at El Paso's Animal Shelter have serious concerns about a bill up for consideration at the State Capitol. Senate Bill 17-81 would limit the number of animals that can be put to sleep at animal shelters across Texas. Marilyn Christensen at the El Paso Animal Shelter says they had to euthanize 18,000 animals last year. She says the animal shelter will face serious overcrowding problems, If they're not allowed to put animals down.
Lawmakers Consider Changes In Juvenile Justice
State lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a bill that would raise the age of juveniles under the Texas criminal justice system from 17 to 18. If the measure advances from the House to the Senate, though, it could face tough opposition. Democrat John Whitmire who oversees criminal justice issues in the Senate, says he's opposed to raising the age to 18.
More Police Are Sporting Body Cameras
Police in Alamogordo have begun wearing body cameras. There's no word yet on the cost of the body cameras, but they're designed to be used as evidence and for training an evaluating police officers. Some officers in Las Cruces and El Paso County have already been equipped with new body cameras in the wake recent fatal police shootings in Ferguson, Missouri and South Carolina.
Fort Bliss Teaches Sex Harassment Prevention
Soldiers at Fort Bliss are undergoing training to prevent sexual harassment. Sergeant First Class Rena Key is part of a team in charge of Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention, otherwise known as SHARP. Key says the Defense Department is working to cut down on the 5,300 sexual assaults reported in the military last year .
