‘Suicide Squad’ Brings Harley Quinn Out to Play For an Extended Promo
From the moment we got our first look at Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad, it was obvious that her take on Harley Quinn would easily be the best thing about the film. A new extended promo for David Ayer’s super-villain team-up further makes that point clear, as The Joker’s (former?) partner-in-crime takes the spotlight and proves that she’s not at all what she seems.
The new promo debuted over on Twitter, and is backed by that great cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” featured prominently in the second official trailer:
As fans of the Arkham Asylum psychiatrist-turned-career criminal know, “puddin’” doesn’t refer to a lunchtime snack — it’s Harley’s nickname for The Joker, her crime buddy and occasional boyfriend. The trailers for Suicide Squad seem to indicate that we’ll get a bit of an origin story for Harley Quinn (formerly known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel), but it may diverge from the one that was established in Batman: The Animated Series, where the character originally made her debut.
Despite a few minor differences (and a major change in costume), Robbie’s iteration of Harley Quinn appears to be quite faithful to the character — at least in terms of attitude, which is where it counts. The best scene in the extended promo above pits Harley against a mysterious villain (one of The Adversary’s lackeys, I assume) and succinctly shows off the character’s range: She’s tough and self-sufficient, but she’s also a bit girly and gets all cutesy when she receives a text from ol’ Mr. J.
Suicide Squad also stars Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis and Joel Kinnaman, and hits theaters on August 5.
