Rescue Mission Of El Paso Needs The Communities Help After Unexpected Migrant Influx
One of El Paso’s largest homeless shelters is asking for the community's help after they received hundreds of migrants this past week and are expecting more to arrive in the coming days.
In case you haven’t turned on the news lately, hundreds of migrants were released in Downtown El Paso in the past several days with no place to go meaning most would be forced to sleep outside on benches and wherever they could find a safe place to sleep.
According to a KVIA report, Border Patrol agents are encountering over 1,000 people a day and recently apprehended hundreds of migrants at the southern border in Socorro this past Tuesday morning.
Due to this influx, many of these migrants have been placed at the Rescue Mission of El Paso temporarily and the shelter has turned into an unexpected migrant shelter overnight.
“We’ve received more than 175 migrant men and women who have traveled far to reach the Rescue Mission and still have a ways to go,” read a post shared to the shelters Facebook page.
Due to this unexpected influx of migrants, the shelter is asking for the community to donate clothing and food items so that the shelter can provide these migrants with the proper clothing they need while they stay at the shelter.
“We are in desperate need of men's shoes (new or used w/o holes or stains), preferably tennis/walking shoes,” continued the post.
The shelter is not at 100% capacity yet and they are trying all they can do to make room for these migrants but in an interview with KFOX, the CEO of The Rescue Mission of El Paso Blake Barrow said that the shelter is being stretched thin.
