With today being St. Patrick's Day, it's the right time to go over some random facts about The Emerald Isle, Ireland.

  • The average height of Irish men is 5 foot 8
  • The average height of Irish women is 5 foot 7
  • 83.6% of the country is Catholic
  • A real Leprechan? Not really, but the shortest Irish man ever was Raymond O'Brien. He was 1 foot 11 inches tall. He passed away in 1795.
  • The Irish are known for mostly having red hair. But this is a bad stereo type because only 9% of the population has natural red hair.
  • The city of Dublin has one pub for every 100 residents. In contrast, the US leader is Pittsburgh, which has 1.18 bars for every 1,000.
  • The Irish drink 131.1 liters of beer per year. That's second in the world behind the Czech Republic.
  • The "Mac" or "O" before a lot of Irish last names means "son of" or "grandson of" in Gaelic.
  • If Dublin Castle or Christchurch Cathedral look familiar if you ever go there, you probably watched The Tudors. They have displays inside Christchurch Cathedral of scenes that were filmed there.
  • Irishman James Hoban designed The White House

And yes, I know I should cover St. Patrick here too, but that's a different story. Stay tuned for that.
