More Proof that El Paso is One of Safest Cities in America

The El Paso Times reported on the recent City Council meeting, saying that the council would discuss two topics: One, the I-10 deck plaza proposal and, two, the most recent crime statistics from the El Paso Police Department.

The preliminary statistics from EPPD show that crime, across all categories, is DOWN from the 2023 numbers. It’s important to note that the 2024 numbers are only through the end of August and there’s no way of knowing where they’ll finish in 3 and a half months at the end of the year. But, as things stand right now, the Sun City is on pace to have even less crime than what was seen last year.

Here are some of the highlights that are expected to be presented by the police to the City Council.

MURDER

So far, there have been 16 murders in El Paso this year. That’s compared to 41 for all of 2023.

ASSAULT

The number of assaults in El Paso stands at 6,856 compared to 10,116 in all of 2023.

VEHICLE THEFT

At the end of August, the number of car thefts stood at 1,396. The number for all of 2023 was 2,437.

The other categories saw (so far) a similar downward trend. Burglary, violent sex offenses, and burglary are significantly down from 2023. Bear in mind, the 2023 numbers are for the entire year and the present 2024 numbers are only through August. But, the numbers are down enough that they’re all pacing to be lower than the 2023 totals…barring some kind of massive crime wave.

I know we’ve all heard about El Paso being named as either “America’s Safest Large City” or at least in the top 5 for almost 20 years now.  For those who don’t believe that narrative (like Gov. Greg Abbott) here’s the proof of the pudding via the El Paso Police Department’s own numbers.
