Unfortunately, growing up in El Paso means that sometimes when you tell people you're from here, you get rude comments.

I traveled a lot as a kid for sports, yes fencing is a REAL sport, and I would come into contact with other kids from across the country. Here are just a FEW of the rude comments I've received over the years:

(1) Is That In Mexico?

No, it's not IN Mexico, thank you very much. Don't be ignorant. It's right NEXT to Mexico.

(2) You Don't LOOK Like You're From There.

What does somebody from El Paso look like? Do you mean brown? Well, I'm sorry my alabaster skin doesn't align with your limited worldview. But I'm an El Pasoan, a Mexican, and I'm white, deal with it. El Paso has all kinds of people, which is one of the reasons it's so special.

(3) The Drug Cartels Run That Place Don't They?

No more than they run YOUR city of Chippewa, New Hampshire. But to be more direct, NO, drug cartels from Mexico do not control El Paso. Even if they might live here.

(4) Does It Smell Bad Because It's Next To A RIVER?

This is a messed-up comment because to call the Rio Grande a "river," is a pretty big exaggeration. No, El Paso does NOT smell because it's next to a river, it smells because there's a sewage water treatment plant right next to the freeway.
