If race fans want to enjoy racing in Texas, we have the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth & the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Both tracks are active in the world of NASCAR. But before them, we used to have 2 more beloved race courses that are sadly no longer with us. While they're gone, their memories are still with us.

NASCAR fans will remember the old Texas World Speedway

The very first race course used by NASCAR in Texas was the iconic Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. The superspeedway was completed in 1968 and was heavily from its inception to the 1980s, even becoming the location of the finale of the NASCAR season, the Texas 500.

Its decline started in the 1980s and was only kept alive due to the road courses used at the track. It was used by the ARCA series from 1991-1993 & used for various speed tests before being closed down in 2015.

The track has also been forever immortalized in the world of video games as it's appeared in 2 games: NASCAR Legends & Need For Speed: ProStreet. So while we can't see the track in real life, at least we can still can in the virtual world.

There was another short lived NASCAR track in Houston, Texas

While there's a lot of history & events about the Texas World Speedway, there's not much about The Meyer Speedway that was in Houston, Texas. The track was built in the 1950s and closed in the late 70s & had only one race in NASCAR and that was during the 1971 season; the 1971 Space City 300 which took place on June 23 and was won by Bobby Allison.

The track is gone today but there IS an aerial photo of the Meyer Speedway taken in 1994, which was posted here. Today there's even a Facebook group dedicated to posting historic photos from the Meyer Speedway & in the Houston area.

But amazingly there IS footage of one race from the Meyer Speedway from back in 1966 so there IS video evidence that this course DID exist.

May the memories of Meyer Speedway & the Texas World Speedway never be forgotten. If you want to read more NASCAR stories, you can read about Dale Earnhardt's favorite spots to hunt in Texas here.
