A state of emergency has been declared in Juárez following the snow and icy temperatures of Christmas weekend.

"It's the most intense snowfall in the last 55 years," Efren Matamoros, the civil protection director in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, told AFP.

The El Paso Times reported that Chihuahua state officials made the declaration on Monday and will submitted within the next several days to the Mexican equivalent of FEMA, called Fonden.

According to Chihuahua officials, Juárez, along with 53 other Mexican cities, suffered heavy snow or sleet, and another 13 reported dangerously low temperatures.

About 12 inches of snow fell in the city over the weekend, causing several roofs to collapse as well as other damage throughout the city, which is still being assessed by officials. While the state awaits word from Fonden, several emergency shelters have been opened in the city to help keep residents warm as temperatures remain below or near freezing.

The same storm system dumped inches of snow across West Texas, from El Paso to San Angelo, to the panhandle, where a state of emergency was also declared in Lubbock amid more than 15 inches of snowfall.
