This Baseball Player Helped a Lucky Arizona Woman Win One Million Dollars
Those who followed baseball in the 90s might remember this crazy story involving a lucky Arizona woman win big money. And yes, we do mean BIG...money. But before we talk about what happened, first we need to meet our lucky contestant & the Arizona player involved in this story.
Gylene Hoyle won a contest for a chance to win million dollars in 1999 at an Arizona Diamondbacks game
Gylene Hoyle from Chandler, Arizona was, at the time, a 31 year old woman who had just won a radio contest from Shamrock Farms. The contest was that if she picked a Diamondback player to hit a home run AND the correct inning, she would win.
Her and her husband decided to go with 2nd basemen Jay Bell. They chose him to score a home run in the 6th inning. Why? Well...just because.
The day the Diamondbacks were playing at home against the Oakland A's. When the 6th inning rolled around, Arizona was up 3-2, the bases were loaded and Jay Bell went up to bat. What happened next is arguably one of the rarest (and certainly one of the most amazing) moments in MLB history.
YUP! To the amazement of the fans, the players and the Hoyles, Jay Bell scored a grand slam and as a result, Gylene was a winner.... a MILLION DOLLAR WINNER.
10 years after that game, Jay would actually surprise Gylene and her husband Clayton at their Arizona home. They may have been winners of all that money but their reactions to seeing Jay after a decade? Priceless...
It's very unlikely that we would see something like this in the world of sports but without a doubt, this is one of the biggest highlights in Diamondbacks history, along with their World Series win in 2001 of course...
