Texas Could Soon Run Out of Water According To State Official

Ok Texas, now I don’t want you to panic but WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF WATER!! Well, kind of.

Texas is known for its wide-open spaces, but Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has a warning for us: those spaces are drying up. The state is losing water fast, especially in the Rio Grande Valley, and it’s causing major problems for farmers. *Cries in Spanish*

Miller says it’s time to stop complaining and start acting

His big idea? Capture stormwater and rainwater before it all flows into the Gulf. He thinks we could use that to irrigate farms and save crops.

But things are already looking rough. In West Texas, the wells are dry, and farmers can’t even grow Pecos cantaloupes anymore—because, you guessed it, no water. This isn’t just a farming problem, though. Miller says the water crisis could drive up grocery and gas prices too. MORE?!?! *Cries again in Spanish*

And it’s not just the weather to blame

South Texas farmers are feeling the hit as the Rio Grande dries up. Thanks to a mix of low rainfall and slow water deliveries from Mexico, the Valley is facing a $495.8 million hit in lost crops. 

Miller thinks it’s time for Texas to update its water plan. The state’s growing population needs more resources, and without them, we could all be feeling the pinch soon.
