Moving to a new place often comes with its share of surprises and the Lone Star State is no exception. Over the years I've heard plenty from out-of-state family and friends about how Texas is nothing like they imagined.

It's true. If you're not prepared, it can be a shock. So much so that an article from SmartAsset brought attention to things you must know before moving to Texas. This put me on the path of considering all I've heard over the years that send non-natives into a tailspin. Look below at why relocating to Texas might just shock you.

LOOK: WHY PEOPLE MOVING TO TEXAS COULD BE IN FOR A BIG SHOCK

First, the size of Texas itself can be startling. It's not just big - it's massive. Texas is the second-largest state in the U.S. which means you could be driving for hours and still be within state borders. This might be a shock for those used to smaller states where a leisurely Sunday drive could take you across several state lines.

The weather in Texas is another element that can catch newcomers completely off guard. Texas is known for its extreme weather. Summers can be brutally hot, with temperatures soaring well above 100 degrees. Parts of Texas can also see snow and ice in the winter, which can be a wake-up call if you are expecting year-round warmth.

Also, Texans’ pride in their state is a big deal. If you’re coming from a place where state pride goes unnoticed, you might find the Texas-sized pride a bit overwhelming. From our Lone Star state flag to the “Don't Mess with Texas” campaign, the pride Texans feel for their state runs deep.

Next is the Texas attitude towards taxes. There's no state income tax, which might sound like a sweet deal, but it also means the state has to find revenue in other ways. Property taxes can be really high, and sales tax also adds up, which might be a shock to your wallet if you're not expecting it.

Finally, the cultural diversity in Texas can be surprising. Texas has a rich blend of cultures, including a strong Mexican influence, which is reflected in the food, music, and art scene. While this can be a wonderful surprise for many, it can also be a bit of a culture shock if you’re not used to such a melting pot.

Moving to Texas can bring a series of revelations for those who are new to the region. However, these revelations are often what makes Texas such a unique and beloved place by those who call it home. I keep telling my out-of-state friends and family that, once they get past the initial surprise, they may find themselves embracing the Texas way.
