If you grew up in El Paso, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve taken a road trip to Carlsbad Caverns at least once.

Maybe it was a school field trip. Maybe your parents loaded up the car one summer because everyone needed a quick getaway. Or maybe you just remember walking into the cave and immediately realizing you should’ve brought a hoodie.

Now, one of the Southwest’s favorite hidden gems is getting some national attention. Carlsbad Caverns National Park has officially been named one of America’s most underrated natural wonders for 2026!

Why This New Mexico Cave Keeps Blowing People Away

Unlike most national parks where the views stretch out in front of you, Carlsbad Caverns sends visitors underground.

And not just a little underground.

The Natural Entrance Trail drops visitors roughly 750 feet below the desert surface through a winding path that feels more like entering another planet than taking a hike. The temperature also shifts fast, going from brutal desert heat to a chilly 56 degrees year-round.

Then comes the Big Room; the largest accessible cave chamber in North America!

The space is so massive that it stretches across more than 8 acres with ceilings tall enough to fit the Statue of Liberty. Somehow, despite all that size and history, it still feels like one of the Southwest’s best-kept secrets.

The Classic Road Trip So Many El Pasoans Grew Up Taking

Part of what makes Carlsbad Caverns so popular in El Paso is how easy the trip feels.

It’s close enough for a quick weekend adventure, but different enough that it feels like a complete escape from the city. Plus, during the summer months, visitors can catch the famous bat flight program where thousands of bats spiral out of the cave at sunset!

And for families trying to survive another scorching Borderland summer, spending part of the day inside a naturally air-conditioned cave honestly sounds pretty perfect. But I do suggest taking the elevator back up.

The Southwest Road Trip Most Travelers Overlook

The article also points out that Carlsbad Caverns works perfectly as part of a larger Southwest road trip alongside Guadalupe Mountains National Park and White Sands National Park.

That’s something El Pasoans have quietly benefited from for years. Within just a few hours, you can hike the highest peak in Texas, explore glowing white sand dunes, and walk through one of the largest cave chambers on Earth.

Not bad for a weekend trip!

And while tourists pack places like the Grand Canyon and Big Bend every summer, Carlsbad Caverns still manages to feel surprisingly uncrowded compared to many of America’s bigger national parks.

Which I think might be part of the magic.
