I've been hosting the State Line Music Series at the State Line Restaurant this year and the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank is this years beneficiary. I've learned a lot about them at these, (free), concerts and I want to share that with you. There's more to them than you might think.
The El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank is the only food bank in El Paso and they not only help feed El Pasoans but those in other areas ... it's a massive task.
As the regional distribution center, we serve as the hub for 65 partner pantries across three counties: El Paso, Culberson, and Hudspeth. We provide food assistance each year to over 160,000 food-insecure individuals in our community, where 2 in 5 people experience food insecurity. - elpasoansfightinghunger.org
Every morning when they open up, there's already a long line that began forming hours before - and it's not just the homeless or underprivileged.
Who Does The El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank help?
The homeless and poor people in our area need help but they're not the only ones. Your neighbor may be struggling. Maybe YOU are having trouble - they're there for you too. Summer breaks can also bring extra burdens ...
As they themselves say, we're all only 1 step from being "food insecure". Job loss, sudden illness or medical issue, divorce, stock market plunge - you name it. Things happen and even the well off can suddenly find themselves having to decide what's more important - a car payment, medical insurance, medicine, etc ... or food.
I had several friends who recently found themselves in a bind during the government shutdown. They were doing really good but suddenly, just like that, they had no income.
Helping The El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank Is Easy
There are a number of ways you can help but cash is king. They will gladly accept donated food items but they can do a lot more with money than they can with the food itself.
Thanks to special deals with grocers and food suppliers, government grants and other things, they can turn 1 dollar into 7 meals. One dollar. Imagine what they could do if everyone donated that buck? With a population of almost 700,000, only half of us, at a dollar a head, could give them around $350,000.
That's 2,450,000 meals.
Now, imagine if we could go $5. Or $10 or $20 ... the numbers get crazy.
They can also really, REALLY use some volunteers. To learn more, click here or call (915) 298-0353.
