El Paso Saw Some Crazy Rain in 2026, But It Wasn’t Even Close to the Record
As monsoon season finally comes to an end in El Paso, we can look back and reflect on just how crazy the weather was in the borderland. This year was especially marked bad after Tropical Storm Polo passed over El Paso in late September.
We saw warnings of potentially 2 to 6 inches of rain landing in El Paso. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the most amount of daily rain that landed in El Paso on a single day actually occurred on September 23 at the El Paso International Airport (1.21 inches). That rain, as you know, led to a lot of flood warnings throughout the Borderland too...
How does the total amount of rain in El Paso compare to previous years?
That was definitely a lot of rain, but when you compare to data collected by the NWS, you’ll be surprised that El Paso has seen much more rain before. The amount of rain we received in 2026 didn’t even crack the top 30.
The most recent date with an alarming amount of rain that landed in El Paso was on June 27-28, 2021 (2.08 inches) and that was only at the half way point on the list.
Not even the historic 2006 floods from over 20 years ago was #1 (it was #2 ). It WAS the greatest amount of rain El Paso has seen in the 21st century. The most amount seen in the 20th century was on July 5-6, 1968 (2.63 inches).
The HEAVIEST rain event ever recorded in El Paso occurred on July 9, 1881 with a total of 6.50 inches. If you compare to that the rest of the state, hey...it’s not AS bad but it’s still the most ever seen in El Paso.
