El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar Arrested By Capitol Police
El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar was arrested earlier today for blocking traffic during an abortion rights rally in front of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C.
U.S Rep. Escobar, who has been vocal about the recent Roe vs. Wade reversal, was seen earlier this afternoon (Tuesday, July 19) getting arrested for blocking traffic during an abortion rights protest after her team posted to Twitter "proudly standing in defense of abortion access and reproductive freedom" as she is hauled away by Capitol Police.
Escobar also took to Instagram to share in part, "The time to take a stand is now. For women's rights, for a better Senate, for everything worth defending."
In the photos and videos circulating across social media, Escobar proudly pumps her arm up as a sign that she and her constituents are nowhere near giving up on female reproductive rights and freedoms.
Hours after her team posted the incident on Twitter, Escobar issued a statement saying:
Protesting injustice in our country is as old as our democracy itself; it is a cornerstone of our history, a principle of our nation, and a faithful mechanism for the will of the people to be heard. That is why, in the face of unprecedented attacks on abortion access and reproductive justice, like the draconian laws and anti-woman agenda we are seeing from the Texas state legislature, Governor Abbott, and the Supreme Court, I joined several of my colleagues in front of the highest court in the land to make good trouble.
My arrest today for civil disobedience was a small act in the centuries-long battle to ensure every woman has the freedom to make personal decisions with those they love and trust without politicians trying to control them. We stand on the shoulders of giants whose struggle against injustices everywhere lights the way forward: the fight didn’t start here, and it’s far from over.
The Congresswoman was not the only one to get arrested; others included Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.; Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y.; Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.; and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.
The fight on the hill continues as Escobar's Senate seat and thirty-five others are up for re-election in November, so go out and vote your voice.
