Are These Dog Breeds Illegal To Own In Texas?

Whether or not certain dog breeds are illegal to own in Texas isn't exactly a yes or no question.

32 states have some kind of law on the books against owning certain dog breeds. 18 don't have any such laws and there are a few that leave sort of a "gray area" when it comes to this.

Texas is one of the gray-ish ones.

You can see which states do and do not have any laws against owning a certain breed of dog here. As far as the lone star state goes, there isn't any law against any breed. In fact there is a law on the books in Texas that actually prevents any such law from being put into effect.

TEX.HEALTH & SAFETY CODE ANN. §822.047

Sec. 822.047. LOCAL REGULATION OF DANGEROUS DOGS. A county or municipality may place additional requirements or restrictions on dangerous dogs if the requirements or restrictions:
(1) are not specific to one breed or several breeds of dogs; and
(2) are more stringent than restrictions provided by this subchapter. - resources.bestfriends.org

Basically, Texas and some other states, like Arizona, have doggy anti-discrimination laws. That doesn't mean dog owners are completely free of all breed related restriction(s) though.

Cities and counties can enact their own bans as can home owners associations, (like this one in Fort Worth), and property owners, landlords, etc. Fort Bliss, for example, bans certain dogs from being allowed to live on post.
