El Pasoans can join in on the ALS awareness, without a bucket of ice water.

You have probably seen at least one of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Videos. Tons of people have joined in on the challenge of pouring ice cold water, over their heads to raise awareness of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Chyeanna Dirksen and her husband are planning to establish the first annual ALS walk in El Paso. Unfortunately, Dirksen's husband will not be able to attend the walk, which he has been helping plan for October, due to receiving deployment orders.

The Dirksen's decided to plan the walk, after finding out El Paso doesn't have an established ALS walk. Chyeanna's husband, a solider at Fort Bliss, lost his mother to ALS, "It was important to my husband to be able to do something like this, to continue the walks that we started back in Iowa," said Dirkesen.

It doesn't matter if you decide to throw a bucket of ice on you, or walk for ALS, as long as you help spread awareness about this devastating disease. We have had some El Pasoans take the challenge, such as the El Paso Chihuahuas' Anti-Hero Cody Decker!

Walk to Defeat ALS will happen on October 11th, at Ascarate Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk will begin at 10 a.m. There is no fee, but donations are greatly appreciated.
