During what ended up being Chris Cornell's final performance, the singer gave one lucky young fan a memory that will last forever.

Dave Craig, who recorded the video above, shared a little about the moment -- and how it almost didn't happen.

Craig's 9-year-old son David is a huge Chris Cornell fan, he told Lubbock's KFMX. So when they had the opportunity to make the two-hour drive to Detroit to see Soundgarden at the Fox Theatre on May 17, Dave said it was an easy decision. They made it to the venue just in time, too.

Other than the one-on-one moment with Cornell (which you can watch in the video above), the young boy, who also plays drums, received some items he'll forever treasure: drum sticks, wrist bands and guitar picks from Chris Cornell.

Dave told us it was difficult to break the news to his son, mere hours later as he was getting up for school, that Chris Cornell was dead. "We didn't want him to find out at school," he explained.

As for how Chris Cornell should be remembered, Dave had a simple reply.

"Hopefully his smile in my video is what people remember," he said.
