There was a time when back-to-school shopping wasn't something you knocked out in a single Target run or with a few clicks online; it was an event.

For a lot of El Paso families, it meant piling into the car, spending the day hopping from store to store, trying on new shoes, picking out the perfect backpack and convincing your parents that you absolutely needed that Trapper Keeper or the folder with your favorite cartoon character on it.

I definitely loved back-to-school shopping- even to this day I love back-to-school shopping, even though I haven't stepped inside a classroom in years!

There's just something about seeing rows of fresh notebooks, colorful folders and backpacks lining the aisles that instantly takes me back. It's one of those little traditions that reminds me just how exciting the start of a new school year used to feel.

These Classic El Paso Stores Made Back-To-School Shopping Special

For many El Pasoans, back-to-school shopping wasn't just another errand. It was part of the excitement of wrapping up summer.

Every family had their own routine. Maybe yours started at Mervyn's for new clothes, JCPenney for school uniforms or Kmart to check every item off the school supply list. No matter where you shopped, those annual trips became traditions that so many of us still remember today.

You'd grab the school supply list, pile into the family car and promise your parents you weren't going to ask for anything extra. Then, somewhere between the school supplies and the checkout line, you'd find yourself trying to convince them why you absolutely needed that backpack, those cool sneakers or the newest box of gel pens.

The El Paso Stores That Made Every School Year Feel New

Some stores just felt like part of back-to-school season.

Whether your family headed to the mall or made a day of shopping downtown, chances are there was one store you looked forward to visiting every August. Some of those stores may be gone, but the memories of those annual shopping trips are still as vivid as ever.

No matter where you shopped, those stores became part of the excitement that came with starting a brand-new school year.

Back-to-school shopping looks a lot different today. Most of us can order everything online without ever leaving the house, and there's no denying how convenient that is.

But I'll admit, I still find myself wandering the school supply aisle every summer. Maybe it's the smell of fresh notebooks, maybe it's all the colorful folders or maybe it's because those annual shopping trips are some of my favorite childhood memories.

Back then, back-to-school shopping wasn't just about checking items off a list.

It was about the excitement of a fresh start, spending the day with your family and making memories at stores that helped define what growing up in El Paso felt like.
