Popular Twitch Streamer Apologizes For Joking About Texas Floods
Texas is still reeling from the deadly floods that swept through parts of the state, displacing families, destroying homes, and claiming the lives of several young victims. At last check, 90 lives had been taken and dozens are still missing; at least 27 of those victims are young children. As communities rally to recover, outrage is growing online- not just over the devastation, but over a popular Twitch streamer’s attempt to turn tragedy into a joke.
The backlash started almost immediately after a clip began circulating online, showing the streamer- known to fans as Nmplol- making what many have called a tasteless and “dark” joke about the young victims of the Texas floods. While some viewers brushed it off as edgy humor, most didn’t find anything funny about it, especially given how recent and raw the tragedy still is.
Who is Nmplol?
Nmplol is a popular Twitch streamer known for gaming content and daily vlogs, with a large following and a co-ownership role in the gaming group One True King. His Twitch channel boasts around 947,000 followers, with Instagram and other socials also popular.
But despite his laid-back online persona, Nmplol recently found himself at the center of controversy after making some dark jokes about the young victims of the Texas floods. It wasn’t just that the joke was off-color- it was that it came during a time when families were still mourning, volunteers were still sandbagging neighborhoods, and parts of the state were literally still underwater.
You can check out the video of his comments below, but be advised, they may be triggering.
When people began calling him out, he didn't really see a need to apologize; instead, he doubled down, saying his comments were just meant as a joke and saying he had nothing to apologize for. That only added fuel to the fire, with more viewers and Texans calling him out for being tone-deaf and insensitive.
Eventually, the pressure mounted, and Nmplol issued a public apology. In it, he acknowledged that he wasn't "fully aware of the situation," making light of such a devastating event.
It was too soon and too dark. Whether the apology was enough? That’s still up for debate online.
