50 Best Comedies of the 21st Century Leaves GLARING Omissions

Rolling Stone put out a list of the 50 Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century. Usually, when you see a list of comedies, like from AFI or Turner Classic, it includes classics like "Caddyshack" and "Sullivan's Travels". This list is a little more interesting, though, because it's only counting movies that have been released since January 1, 2000.

So, what are the greatest comedies according to this list? Here's the top five, then I'll point out some movies that should have been higher along with some glaring, unforgivable omissions.

1.) Best in Show (2000)

2.) In the Loop (2009)

3.) Bridesmaids (2011)

4.) Step Brothers (2008)

5.) Idiocracy (2006)

What They Got Right

"Idiocracy" is not only one of the funniest movies of the 21st century, it's also chronically overlooked. It's satire of the caliberof Jonathan Swift or Twain. I was really happy to see it in the top 5.

Love the #1 choice "Best in Show". It was a triumphant return from many of the same people who brought us perhaps the greatest mockumentary of all time, "This Is Spinal Tap".

"What We Do in the Shadows" came in at #17. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. Today. Right now. It's awesome.

Movies On the List That Should Have Been Ranked Higher

"Jackass: The Movie"

" Borat"

" Hot Fuzz" (my preference over "Shaun of the Dead" for Pegg and Frost movies)

Movies on the List That I Didn't Even Know WERE Comedies

(What is a comedy? These movies may have some ELEMENTS of comedy. But, hell, "Hotel Rwanda" even had a couple of funny moments but I wouldn't call IT a comedy. These are all movies that I didn't even realize were comedies when I saw them in the theater.)

#39 "Sideways" (Alcoholism=Hilarity)

#34 "Adaptation" (I guess it's funny in the way ALL Nicholas Cage movies are funny.)

#11 "In Bruges" ( Good movie,though)

#6 "Punch Drunk Love" (It has Adam Sandler and, surprisingly, it's not terrible but I had no idea it was a comedy)

#49 "American Psycho" (OK, then, I guess "The Purge" is a yuk-fest)

Coen Brothers Movies Funnier than "A Serious Man"

(Don't misunderstand me: I love the Coen's and "A Serious Man" is a fine movie. But check out these Coen movies that didn't even make the list!)

"Intolerable Cruelty"

" Burn After Reading" (in which Brad Pitt gets shot in the face! With humorous intent!)

" The Lady Killers"

"O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" (The fact that this movie isn't on the list of Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century kind of disqualifies the entire list, if I'm being honest. "O, Brother" is one of my favorite comedies of ANY century.)

Other Great Comedies Left Completely Off the List

"Napoleon Dynamite" (hugely quirky, hugely quotable)

"Bruno" (the first and last 30 minutes of this film had me laughing as hard as I've ever laughed)

"Midnight in Paris" (did they leave Woody Allen movies off the list because of the exual-say erversion-pay?)

"Shrek"

" Rat Race" (C'mon, dad, I'm prarie-doggin' it back here!)

" Super Troopers" (SUPER EFFING TROOPERS!)

"Elf" (a comedy AND Christmas classic!)

" The Hangover" (not necessarily on my list but I know a lot of people loved it)

OK, hear me out on this next one. I know you wouldn't normally think of this kind of movie or even this genre as being a "comedy", per se. But, honestly, I think I laughed as hard and as often during this film as I did during any movie I went to go see in 2017. And that movie is...

"Thor: Ragnarok". Who knew the long-foretold end of the world was going to be so goddamned hilarious? Not me!

Oh, I think I should also mention, at least once more, the criminal neglect that is leaving "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" off this list.
