Taking a road trip to pick out the perfect pumpkin at an actual patch is the ideal way to welcome and breathe in the fresh fall air.

While it may not feel like it, fall is less than a month away, and soon we’ll be able to have some outdoor fun while picking pumpkins and taking all those sweet seasonal photo ops and selfies surrounded by bales of hay and, of course, pumpkins.

So far, three nearby pumpkin patches will open in New Mexico, while locally, El Paso Corn Maze has yet to announce and confirm its status.

Picking The Perfect Pumpkin:

  • Color: Look for a completely orange pumpkin
  • Size: Medium for carving; small for cooking; large for décor
  • Stem: It’s not a handle; stem will break
  • Ripeness: Press thumb to the bottom of the pumpkin and check that the shell is hard and doesn’t dent or scratch easily; avoid pumpkins with soft spots, cracks, or splits
  • Bugs: Look for bugs or small holes that could mean insect problems

Happy Pumpkin Picking!
