Halloween is a great holiday. I think it's a great holiday for both kids and adults. When it's not spooky season it can get a little sad. Thankfully, there are tons of films out there that feature Halloween so that you can celebrate the holiday year round!

Below I've gathered a list of 13 great Halloween movies that actually HAPPEN on Halloween. No, you won't see any movies from the Halloween franchise; yes, I'm aware that individually they are great movies, but this list won't feature them. There's eleven movies in the entire franchise and I'm sure each deserve a spot on this list but that would have taken up too much! I wouldn't have wanted to leave any out! Instead, this list will feature some (obvious) Halloween movies and maybe some that you haven't seen. I've also decided to feature some kid-friendly movies because maybe you have kids or maybe you're still a kid at heart.

If a night out on Halloween is not for you, consider making it a movie night with any of the movies below. Happy Halloween!

    Hocus Pocus

    Rated PG

Let's start with the obvious one here. Hocus Pocus is a great Halloween movie, despite what certain morning show hosts say (ahem, Buzz). It's silly and cute, but Halloween is the center of this movie.

    Trick 'r Treat

    Rated R

I cannot recommend this movie enough. It's become a Halloween classic, and a must-watch at my house. It's five stories within the same universe that all come together on All Hallows Eve. It also gives us the rules that one must abide by on Halloween and introduces us to Sam.

    Tales of Halloween

    Rated R

Taking a cue from Trick 'r Treat, Tales of Halloween says it all in the title. You get ten stories, directed by ten different filmmakers, taking place in the same time and place. If ten seems like too much, trust me, it certainly doesn't feel like it. I only recently saw this movie for the first time, reluctantly, and to my surprise I loved it.

    May

    Rated R

A movie about a socially awkward girl who sets out to make the perfect friend. At all costs. It all comes together on Halloween night. It also features a young Anna Faris.

  • 5

    Idle Hands

    Rated R

"Idle hands are the devils playground" that's the theme here, especially after a slacker teen get's his hand possessed. Hilarity ensues because it features Seth Green, and young Jessica Alba and 90's heartthrob Devon Sawa.

    Casper

    Rated PG

Another movie featuring 90's heartthrob Devon Sawa as Casper the friendly ghost. Christina RIcci moves into a mansion with her dad in search of answers from the afterlife.

  • 7

    Ginger Snaps

    Rated R

A movie that seems like it was made for me and my sister. Two death-obsessed sisters, outcasts in their suburban neighborhood, must deal with the tragic consequences when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf. I also like to think of it as a "coming of age" story.

    Hell House LLC

    Not Rated

I reluctantly watched this movie thinking it was dumb. There's this one, the second part and a third movie. I've watched them all! A scary story that has different layers to it after a crew return to the scene of a horrific Halloween tragedy.

    Terrifier

    Unrated

Clowns are scary, Art the clown is super scary. On Halloween night two girls find out just how demented this clown is.

  • 10

    Night of the Demons

    Rated R

\When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep teenagers from leaving their Halloween party and turn their gathering into a living Hell. This should teach everyone not to party in an abandoned funeral parlor.

    The Houses October Built

    Not Rated

Haunted houses are fun, looking for the ultimate haunted house attraction is trouble for this group of friends.

  • 12

    Fun Size

    Rated PG-13

A cute Halloween movie about a teen who loses her brother on Halloween night and has to find him. I enjoyed this movie and my nephew approve of it, or it could be because they thought Victoria Justice was cute.

    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

    Rated PG

Lots of people will argue with me on this one, but E.T. is totally a Halloween movie. The movie inspires so many great costumes every year, and I just love the trick or treating scene where E.T. sees Yoda and starts saying "home."
