This doesn't happen often so, take advantage of it while you can!

The Trinity Site sits on military land north of White Sands Missile Range. The area is heavily restricted but, twice a year, the public is allowed to visit the spot where the first atomic bomb was detonated. The next "open house" will be October 1st from 8:00am 'til 2:00pm.

Entry is free and you don't have to make reservations. You will have to hike a little though as it's about 1/4 of a mile walk from the reception area to ground zero. Several photos are displayed there and you can also visit, via shuttle, the Schmidt/McDonald Ranch House where the bomb's plutonium core was assembled.

To get to the Trinity Site, go through the Stallion Range Center gate. From there, it's about a 17-mile drive to the reception area. For more info, call 575-678-1134 or, click here. From El Paso to Trinity takes a little over 3 hours. (Unless you drive like me...then, 2-ish.)
