The Sabbath guitarist gets animated to tell how losing his fingertips led to the invention of light gauge strings and a whole new guitar sound.

Black Sabbath guitarist/founding member Tony Iommi created a dark, gloomy sound that axeslingers to this day try and emulate. A horrible accident almost ended it before it started though.

Before Sabbath became the unofficial "Godfathers" of Heavy Metal, Iommi was working as a welder.  One day, assigned to work on a machine he had never operated before, an accident cut off two of his finger tips. Fearing he would never play again, the aspiring young guitarist got creative and what he did not only launched one of the most successful bands in rock history, he revolutionized rock guitar!

In the debut episode VH-1's animated series "The Complete History Of Heavy Metal", Iommi himself explains what happened and what came from it.
