El Paso has several trails for hiking and biking with beautiful scenery. Here's some tips to keep you safe during the hot summer months outdoors in El Paso.

Even with the temperature hitting over 100 degrees in the desert, people still love to go outdoors and enjoy El Paso. While the outdoor activities are fun and still wonderful to enjoy, people need to make sure they able to handle the heat and prepared for the weather.

The El Paso Fire Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife released tips on how people can stay safe when they are outdoors hiking and biking.

  • Plan your outdoor activity before you go. Make sure you know where you are going and the rules of that particular place.
  • Never hike beyond your abilities. If you feel fatigued, take a break. Don't overexert yourself and know your limits.
  • Always stay on the marked trails. Straying off the path could result in an injury, encountering dangerous wildlife or you could get lost. You could also damage the desert soil.
  • Carry a cell phone for emergencies. It is also wise to have a whistle, mirror, flashlight or some other type of signaling device in case of an emergency.
  • Know what type of wildlife lives in the area you are hiking or biking in. Check online or call the ranger station.
  • Make sure you have plenty of water and some light snacks.
  • Check the weather conditions before you leave and dress accordingly.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during extreme weather conditions and seek shelter during strong winds and thunderstorms.
