I was THE target demo when this movie came out, and I loved it. Still do actually.  A horror movie, that is incredibly self-aware of every horror movie cliche. If for some strange reason you haven't seen this yet, be warned ***SPOILERS AHEAD***

This movie had Drew Barrymore on their poster, then killed her off in the first scene. It constantly poked fun at the horror genre and its stereotypes, only to have its characters play out those exact stereotypes.

Scream breaks down the horror movie rules:

  • Never have sex
  • Don't drink or do drugs
  • Never say "I'll be right back"
  • Everyone is a suspect
  • Never ask "Who's there?"
  • Never go inspect a strange noise

Of course the first four were courtesy of Randy, while the final two were from the killer.

Some interesting notes about Scream

  • The janitor in the movie is an homage to Wes Craven's Freddy KruegerHe's not only wearing a green and red sweater, but the classic Freddy hat. Principal Himbry also calls him Fred. (side note - that's Wes Craven playing Fred the Janitor)
  • The high school scenes were originally supposed to be filmed at Santa Rosa High School. But the school board read the script before filming started and wouldn't allow the film to be shot there because of the violence. So towards the end of the credits, look for "NO THANKS WHATSOEVER TO THE SANTA ROSA CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD."
  • Tatum references "Wes Carpenter" in the movie. Which is a combo of Wes Craven (who directed the movie) and John Carpenter (who directed Halloween, which the kids are watching at their party)
  • The killer's voice, was actually done by Roger Jackson. Who has done voices for many things, including Star Wars and Star Trek.
