A Houston police officer comforted his dying horse after she was accidentally hit by a truck. A passerby caught the heart-wrenching moment.

A Houston police horse named Charlotte was only six years old when she tragically died after being spooked and running into the path of a cement truck on the street.

A passerby caught the moment when her officer companion, Officer D. Herrejon, laid down in the street with Charlotte to comfort her during her last moments. The accident happened on Dec. 3. Charlotte died of her injuries. The Houston Police Department posted the photo of Offer Herrejon comforting Charlotte during her last moments.

Charlotte had worked with the Houston Police Department for four years, and was known for always being ready for work and loving to nuzzle children.

Here' s what the Houston Police Department said about Charlotte and her untimely death:

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Charlotte, an HPD Mounted Patrol horse, who died in the line of duty this morning in a motor vehicle accident. ..Charlotte came to HPD as an unstarted 2-year old Tennessee Walker from Oklahoma. She thrived in HPD Mounted Patrol’s barefoot and natural horsemanship programs. She passed her evaluation period with flying colors and was working the streets of Downtown Houston within a short time of being started under saddle. She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for 4 years. She will be missed.
