The New Mexico state legislature shot down the proposal to legalize ganja in New Mexico.

Things were looking good for a proposal to legalize marijuana in the state of New Mexico as it made it's way to the final vote. The state legislature didn't go for it though, voting 24-17 against it.

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, the proposal:

would have allowed people 25 and older to buy and smoke marijuana. The measure also would have legalized industrial hemp, a cousin of the marijuana plant, that has myriad commercial uses.

The legal age was set at 25 instead of 21 because medical research shows that the human brain is still not fully developed until 25. Being that New Mexico borders El Paso on three sides, this would have been great news for El Paso pot lovers. State representatives predict this won't be the last time the issue makes it to the house though so, there's still hope!
