Learning to handle the death of a loved one doesn't have to be a total bummer.

The 6th annual Before I Die New Mexico Festival is coming to Albuquerque October 16th thru the 21st. Events are scheduled all over the Albuquerque area.

Losing a loved one is tough enough. What comes next ... funeral arrangements, wills, probate, "Do Not Resuscitate" orders, etc, are even tougher when you're mourning.

According to the Before I Die New Mexico Festival website,

The festival has entertaining and educational elements, including field trips to funeral homes and cemeteries, speakers and group discussions, comedy and games, Death Cafe conversations, and more.

I was curious what they serve at a Death Cafe. Probably doughnuts and coffee at best ... turns out it's really just a meeting with a cool name.

Very serious matters are approached in light hearted fashion throughout the festival. Here's the schedule:

  • Monday – Money and Mourning at Daniels Family Funeral Services – Wyoming Chapel
  • Tuesday – Aging and Mortality at Cooper Creations
  • Wednesday – Cremation and Burial at Sunset Memorial Park
  • Thursday – Greening Funerals at Passages International Headquarters
  • Friday – Discussing Death Won’t Kill You at French Funerals & Cremations Rio Rancho
  • Saturday – Murder and Mayhem – Historic Fairview Cemetery

You can register and see prices for events here. The cost of the "Murder and Mayhem" tour is actually a donation to the non profit Fairview Cemetery. Zoom sessions are free.
