Five Finger Death Punch‘s 2014 just got a lot more interesting with the announcement that they will be co-headlining a fall trek with Volbeat, with support from Hellyeah and Nothing More. Guitarist Jason Hook took a few minutes to speak with ‘Loudwire Nights’ host Full Metal Jackie about the tour, and he also shared a little on what ‘The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell, Vol. I and II’ has done for their musical growth. Check out the chat below.

It’s Full Metal Jackie on Loudwire Nights. Jason Hook from Five Finger Death Punch with us on the show … Of course Five Finger Death Punch released two great records last year, ‘The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell Vol. I & II.’ Going forward, how have these latest records changed the way this band thinks about the music it will make next?

I think that we feel more open and maybe more free. Certainly making two records allowed us to stretch out a little bit. On both volumes, we have two cover songs, an instrumental, a song that has piano, stuff like that. I think like any band over time, you start to grow into your own and we are definitely feeling like we have that freedom, or at least we’ve earned that freedom. It’s hard to say what the next record will be exactly. We just try to do what we do naturally.

As soon as you start to outthink it, or predict what people are expecting, that’s when you can run into problems. We program ourselves to do what we do naturally, and if it fits, it fits.

Let’s talk about the video for ‘House of the Rising Sun.’ It’s epic. It really is a mini-movie and it makes the band bigger than life. It’s great promotion, but was there also a little bit of doing it just because it would be so much fun?

Absolutely. Anyone who has been involved in the making of a video knows it can be very long days, a lot of sitting around. So we always try to incorporate activities, or personnel that’s fun for us. We’ve always laden the videos with a bunch of scantily clad ladies — that’s step one. Then for me personally, getting to ride my dirtbike around for three days was great. It sort of offsets the work feel of making that video. It was a great setting. We all live in Vegas, where the desert, we got to drive around with a bunch of cool stuff.

You’re going back on the road here in the States with Volbeat, Hellyeah and Nothing More. It’s a great bill. Jason, why is putting together the right combination of bands for a tour just as important as putting together the right songs for an album? Or coming up with the right idea for a video?

I think when people look at the lineup or the package of a particular concert, I think people immediately think the band and the song they love. So, for me or at least the way I feel, you try to package the bands that have a good catalog of songs that resonate with people. At the end of the day, people just want to come out and sing along, bang their head and if the songs — if you get a band that doesn’t have songs that aren’t as popular, then that’s like a dead spot in the night. So we’re always trying to pick the bands that have the widest catalog of popular songs. I think we’ve nailed it on this one. Volbeat, Five Finger Death Punch, you just can’t beat it. It’s like a night of sing-along and aggro [laughs].

Looking forward to seeing that one. Again, Volbeat, Five Finger Death Punch, Hellyeah, Nothing More all going to be on tour this fall. Jason, really appreciate you being a guest, thanks.

Anytime.
