As stupid as it sounds, this is actually a thing. Parties where people try to intentionally catch COVID-19 just to win a few bucks.

KVIA reports that college kids are throwing the parties in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. While at first thought to be silly rumors, it has now come to the attention of various officials in the area that the parties are really happening. Tickets are sold and people with and without COVID-19 gather together to party and try and transmit the disease. The "winner" is the first one to catch COVID-19. Our news partner, KVIA, reports that Tuscaloosa City Council member Sonya McKinstry said:

The first person confirmed by a doctor to have coronavirus after the exposure wins the money made off the ticket sales, she said. Over the past few weeks, there have been several parties in the city and surrounding areas, and probably more that officials don’t know about" - KVIA

I wonder how the "winnings" stand up against the medical bills?

As stupid as this sounds, it is Darwinism at it's finest and could ... in some ways ... do some good. Granted, survival rates are high but, there have been many deaths. Even the healthiest person could be that one wild card case where some other, heretofore unknown complication sets in and they wind up dying from this virus. I like free money too but, when it comes to that, I think I'll just keep playing the lottery.

I'll also keep my mask on, my hands washed and my distance from others at 6 to 8 feet.
