A student at an El Paso high school, in an attempt to commit suicide, set himself on fire Tuesday morning, according to school officials said.

According to officials with the El Paso Independent School District, a 16-year-old student at Irvin High School lit his own arm on fire using a lighter. The incident took place on campus.

The El Paso Times reported that the student was transported to an area hospital with severe, but non-life-threatening burns and school officials said they believe the student's intent was to commit suicide.

EPISD officials said a school officer was called and assisted in extinguishing the fire. No other students were injured in the incident.

School officials were offering counseling to Irvin students affected by the incident and said they were working with the boy involved, as well as his family.
